Artifacts
A collection of moments during my time at NC State.
Complied for the Univeristy Honors Program.
Artifacts 1-4
Lab Report 3 – This artifact is a lab report from an honors “Inquiry, Discovery, and Literature” class I completed during my first semester of college. The course was centered around the ethics and usage of AI right at the beginning of the “GPT” boom that came in 2023. I chose to highlight this report because this course was one of the few classes I took outside of my engineering discipline. I loved getting to participate in a socratic-style class that taught about developing critical thinking skills and exploring ethical issues.
ASB Dominican Republic and ASB Peru – During my first two years at school, I discovered the ASB program which would come to be a large part of my college experience. The ASB program is incredible, it allows students to see parts of the world and expand their worldview, while learning about social issues and getting to serve communities around the world. As a participant on ASB Dominican Republic, I volunteered with a local non-profit, Servicio Para la Pez, to build sustainable water collection systems in a rural community with limited access to water. On ASB Peru, I volunteered with the Peru-based Fuller Center to build a roof and pour concrete on two houses the center was building for local residents.
International Paper Internship – The summer after my freshman year, I completed an internship with International Paper at the now closed Savannah paper mill. I worked as a process engineering intern and completed a demolition project, created press felt permeability historical curves, and facilitated safety initiatives. This opportunity solidified my interest in manufacturing and was a great introduction to the paper industry.
Caldwell Fellows Philosophy of Leadership – One of the most important events during my time at NCSU was acceptance into the Caldwell Fellows, a servant leadership based scholarship program. The Caldwell experience taught me a lot about the importance of reflection, gratitude, and always striving to think big. Many of the experiences I was able to have were made possible by the Caldwell scholarship and I love the community of support within the program. The Philosophy of leadership paper comes from the second-year leadership course we completed as a cohort. The paper explores my definition of leadership and how I hope to lead as I go into the workforce and into adulthood.

USC 210 Final Assignment – This artifact is a final assignment from a USC 210, a tutor training course for the library’s Academic Success Center. During my sophomore and junior years I worked as both an individual and group tutor for calculus, economics, chemistry, and physics. Working as a tutor improved my communication skills and ability to motivate change in others.
Georgia-Pacific Palatka Internship – The second internship I completed was at a paper mill in Palatka, Florida. There I worked as a process engineer and had an exciting summer learning more about linerboard manufacturing. I learned so much from the Kraft department team who supported me through value-added projects such as chemical trials and installing a chemical skid.
Tampere, Finland Study Abroad – One of the most memorable experiences from college was studying abroad in Finland as a bioproduct engineering exchange student. It was an amazing opportunity to learn about the paper industry in another part of the world, build friendships with people from all across Europe, and see the beautiful landscape that Finland has to offer. Living in Finland taught me a lot about what I value and hope to achieve out of life and inspired me to pursue a travel position upon graduation. The artifact is a magazine made by the Finnish bioproduct students. Page 67 contains an article with a brief description of my adventures in Finland.
ASB Team Leader Class – After participating in two ASBs, I applied and was selected to become a team lead. I was so excited to be able to give back to the program that had done so much for me. Throughout the rest of college, I led three ASB trips. The first was to Orlando, Florida to volunteer at Give Kids the World, a free amusement park for families of children with critical illnesses. The second was to Chang Dao, Thailand to volunteer at Borderless Friends Foundation, a residential home for children seeking refugee, safe educational opportunities, and Thai citizenship. The last ASB I was able to lead was to Washington, DC to volunteer at several organizations committed to assisting people out of the cycle of poverty.

Georgia-Pacific Halsey Internship – The third internship I completed was as a process engineer at the Georgia-Pacific mill in Halsey, Oregon. This was an exciting experience because I was able to move across the country for the summer and assist with the start-up of two converting lines. I learned a lot about how large-scale commissionings operate and about how beautiful the pacific northwest is.
Senior Design Final Presentation – Completing senior design was a great way to wrap up my time within the Paper Science program. While challenging, the experience taught me a lot about capital project planning, how to problem solve, and how to tackle implementing complex processes on a large scale. I came out of the course a much better engineer and feel more confident going into the workforce.
ASB Thailand – One of my favorite opportunities was getting to lead ASB Thailand during my fourth-year of college. Volunteering for Borderless Friends, exploring Chiang Dao and Chiang Mai, and playing with the children at the compound was a profound experience and greatly improved my understanding of the political environment of Southeast Asia. Voith Field Service Engineer Internship – The last internship I completed was with Voith Paper as a field service engineer. In this role, I was able to travel across the country to troubleshoot process problems and help with commissionings of equipment. I learned so much in the role from Voith’s experienced engineers and I am thrilled to start my career with them as the first female field service engineer at their U.S. location.
